My obituary of Billy Casper is in today's Daily Telegraph; you can link to the digital version here. It's pretty much as written; there were a number of stories about Casper's great personal kindnesses with other golfers that I left out for reasons of space, but her seemed a truly admirable character, the very definition of what we seem to expect sportsmen to be.I remember Casper convincing me you didn't need to be a freak of nature to be a great athlete (though you might argue his temperament, concentration, and hand/eye coordination were all pretty freaky). In episode 4 of Bosch, Harry tells Jerry Edgar that 'any sport you can play while smoking or drinking isn't a sport', but watching Billy Casper beat the Big Three gave the average guy great hope....
